Understanding Governance: My Pathway to Board Experience

When I joined the Pathway to Board program, I didn’t realise it would be such a personal journey. It wasn’t just about leadership—it was about discovering my voice and understanding how I could make a difference.

Launched in March 2022 by several housing associations, including CCHA, Taff, Linc Cymru, Cadwyn, and Hafod, the Pathway to Board program equips people, particularly those from Black, Asian, and minority ethnic backgrounds, with the skills and knowledge to participate effectively on any board.

At TPAS Cymru, I’ve always been passionate about driving forward tenant’s voice in Net Zero initiatives. But preparing to join a board has been a whole new challenge. It’s about more than just governance; it’s about bringing fresh perspectives, shaped by diverse experiences, to the leadership table.

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of having diverse voices in leadership. Our strength at TPAS Cymru lies in having different viewpoints, which lead to richer discussions and better decisions. Diversity isn’t just a goal—it’s essential for meaningful leadership. This program has reinforced how crucial it is to create an environment where every voice is heard and valued.

I’ve also come to appreciate the balance between assurance—knowing the systems are in place—and reassurance, the confidence that these systems are working effectively. This balance is key to navigating the challenges of leadership and knowing when to step back and trust the team to handle the details.

Financial realities are always a consideration, especially as we push forward with decarbonisation. Rising costs demand careful financial management and proactive risk assessment.

A key moment for me was observing a board meeting at Cwmpas, where I saw how strategic thinking combined with compassion can guide an organisation through complex issues. This experience highlighted the importance of being adaptable and forward-thinking.

This journey has also deepened my pride in being part of TPAS Cymru. We are not just a team, we are a community of people with diverse experiences and ideas, and that’s what makes us strong.

Looking forward, I am enthusiastic about exploring board opportunities in the future. I believe that with the right mix of knowledge, experience, and a commitment to ongoing learning, I can contribute effectively to board roles. This program has certainly prepared me for that, and I remain open to the possibility of board positions where I can bring my insights and passion for meaningful leadership.
