Tenants Voice Cymru Forum – How social landlords should set their rents

Wednesday 15th January 2025: 10.30am – 12.00pm

Come along and find out what is happening with social housing rents in Wales and share your thoughts with Welsh Government officials leading this important work.

Welsh Government (WG) is currently reviewing their Rent Policy which guides how all social landlords in Wales must set the rents they charge.  It is important that social housing tenants have opportunities to feed into this review.  To enable this to happen we have invited Repa Antonio from Welsh Government to the January Tenants Voice Cymru Forum.  Repa is leading on this important work and will share what is happening and to hear any thoughts you may have to feed into the development of a new WG Rent Policy.

Repa said: We are grateful for the opportunity to hear direct from tenants about their thoughts, opinions and experiences on this important topic.”

Some background to social rent setting in Wales

In Wales, all social landlords need to adhere to the Welsh Government’s Standard for Social Housing Rents and Service Charges (Rent and Service Charge Standard) when setting their rents.  This standard includes requiring landlords to look at affordability for Tenants, and how landlords undertake effective tenant engagement and consultation when setting rents.

The current Standard is in place up until 31st March 2026, so the Welsh Government has started work to look at developing a clear, more robust social rent standard for the future.  This is to ensure the future social rent policy reflects the Welsh housing context and balance existing and future needs of both social landlords and their current and future tenants
