Involving Tenants in Health and Safety issues

Tuesday 12th October: 10.30am – 12.30pm

Our second event of Health and Safety Week provides an exciting opportunity to hear from 3 social landlords in England and 1 tenants’ group in Wales who’ve been working closely with their tenants/residents in relation to health and safety matters.

Verity Calderbank, Head of Marketing & Communications at Stockport Housing Group will present how a campaign to retrofit sprinklers was developed and recognised as an award-winning approach.  Hear about the clear guidance provided by SHG to customers, how they consulted with residents, and provided information and reassurance to customers generally. Verity will also talk about how this model could be used in a range of campaigns/communication with tenants.

Torus will share their experience of creating ‘Your Home Your Safety Guide’, a booklet for tenants, developed with tenants, in response to the tragic events at Grenfell Tower and the Social Housing White paper.   A key aspect of the project was tenant engagement throughout, from initial concept to design and printing.   The guide outlines safety information and explains the responsibility of both Torus and the tenant.

Alicia Munroe, Gavin Rumble and Monique Chang, a resident of Phoenix Community Housing based in south London, will be talking about their innovative projects designed to inform and consult with tenants and residents about being safe in their homes. Hear about the Phoenix Academy and how health and safety forms part of the CIH level 1 education programme offered to Phoenix Community Housing residents.

AND, Hear from Paul Clasby on how Barcud Cyf, formerly, Tai Ceredigion and Mid Wales Housing Association, are involving their tenants’ group in Health & Safety.  Paul is a tenant and the elected Chairperson of the Barcud Monitoring Group, the independent tenants’ body for tenants and leaseholders of Barcud Cyf.
