End Sex for Rent Campaign Launch
Today I attended the End Sex for Rent campaign launch, and I have to say, I was absolutely horrified. Predatory landlords are offering both female and male tenants accommodation with free bills in exchange for sex. A survey found that over the last 5 years, 6,900 women and 4,600 men in Wales had been asked for sex to cover their rent. This is a real issue; it isn’t something that is only happening in the big cities, it is happening everywhere. These landlords are criminals. They are targeting some of the most vulnerable individuals who are desperately in need of a place to stay.
The sad reality of this is that it is indisputably linked to the lack of affordable housing. Not to forget the freeze on Local Housing Allowance and how this is putting people at risk every day.
Working together across sectors to raise awareness and support for these victims couldn’t be any more crucial at this time.
If you believe you are a victim of sex for rent or have been approached by your landlord who offers free or reduced rent in return for sexual favours, then help is available. You can contact Shelter Cymru on 0345 075 5005
